Programs

The WHJESP offers a comprehensive after school program which runs daily Monday through Friday from 4:30 pm-6:15 pm. The program runs September through June.

Gear Up A Child

Gear Up A Child is a program that provides human services year round to youth, their families, and community organizations.  The objective of this program is to provide new and previously owned athletic equipment, computers, along with financial support to disadvantaged children or organizations..

Summer Programming

Over ten individual sports clinics are offered with instruction in the basic fundamental skill development for each sport. The program is open to all male & female residents in the metropolitan Buffalo & Lackawanna area between the ages of 7-16. The summer program also offers foreign language, math and science classes, computer training, tap dance and chess. The program operates July through August.

Tennis

Equipment maintenance, vocabulary, fundamental skills & drill, how to score and job opportunities that are related to the field will be covered.

Golf

Students will be taught to select and prepare equipment properly, apply skills, strategies, rules and conventions, and participate safely with appropriate personal ad social behavior. Students will be given a warm-up prior to each session.

Basketball

Students will learn effective skills (e.g. passing/receiving, lay-up and outside shooting, dribbling, rebounding, guarding, etc.) along with regulations, rules, and drills that can be utilized for personal development.

Football

Campers will gain knowledge enabling them to play by the rules specified for their age levels, and to demonstrate knowledge of conventions, terminology, protocols, and etiquette specific to the activity that one would expect of a capable participant. Not available.

Baseball

Chess

Our chess program will teach the children the history of the game, rules, and movements along with the values of each piece. Students will learn how to play team chess, and be presented wit various chess situational problems to test their knowledge and skill development. They will be taught how to play by all the rules of local and national tournaments with the usage of clocks and score sheets. Not available.

Soccer

Students will be taught basic skills, strategies, rules and conventions, and participate safely with appropriate personal, social behavior, and job opportunities that are related to the field will be covered. Campers will be given a warm-up period prior to each session.

Track & Field

Campers will gain knowledge enabling them to play by the rules specified for the age levels, and to demonstrate knowledge of conventions, terminology, protocols, and etiquette specific to the activity that one would expect a capable participant.

Volleyball

Campers will learn the skills (e.g. legal overhand serve, forearm pass, set, spike, etc.) with few, if any, observable errors in technique, along with the rules & regulations of game play. Not available.

High School Girls Only Elite Volleyball Camp

Campers receive competitive level instruction. This program is exclusively for High school girls 14-18 years old. Not available.

Crew

Rowing is a rewarding sport with a unique balance of techniques, fitness and character. Classes at the West Side Rowing Club are for the complete beginner to learn the basics to enjoy a new sport on the waterways. Learn-To-Row coaches are hand-selected from rowers within the West Side Rowing Club membership who have shown expertise in both knowledge of the rowing stroke and the ability to teach it. They take pride in teaching participants to be well rounded with knowledge in both sculling and sweep rowing.

Math Club

Our math instructors will tutor and teach students to perform more proficient in various areas of mathematics ranging from basic addition and subtraction through geometry. Students will be evaluated to find their skill levels to establish their baseline for improvement. Homework will be reviewed in addition to mathematical group strategy games will keep an enjoyable and interesting learning environment. New York State Standards will also be incorporated to keep all levels on task for final exams.

Science Club

Our science instructors will conduct several different labs that will range from lab safety, first aid, to topics such as: how different hair products keep hair from breaking, test to see if the amount of vitamin C changes over time, find out what makes yeast grow the best, construct solar heaters from recycled products and figuring out what kind of soil is in their yard and see how much water it holds! Students will be geared towards local, regional, and state competitions. New York State Standards will also be incorporated to keep all levels on task for superior test results on their final exams. This is a pilot program.

Computers

Our instructor teaches the youth how to use XP operating system, Microsoft Works, and Microsoft Office applications such as, Publisher and Excel. The students are also instructed on how to setup their own e-mail accounts, develop their own website and internet safety. Not available.

Spanish

This course teaches six easy techniques you can use to combine a series of Spanish words together into sentences. With the tried and true methods taught in the course, you’ll be able to engage in conversational Spanish in no time. The class is taught in a relaxed environment outside the traditional classroom setting. Not available.

Tap/Creative Dance

Our tap dance instructor will teach students to perform basic motor and manipulative skills. They will attain competency in a variety of physical activities and proficiency in a few select complex motor movements. Students will be instructed in the specific movement skills, both locomotors (step), and axial (body alignment, positions and gestures), as well as the rhythms and timing, positions and others, partners and others, spatial formations, appropriate personal expression, and aesthetic criteria essential to the performance of the activity. Students will learn to create dances or routines. They will also learn the important traditions, terminology, and etiquette; clear expectations for appropriate personal and social behavior.
