1MLB – WHJESP 4th Annual Play Ball Weekend Hits a Home Run
Blue skies filled with clouds like cotton candy appropriately adorned the day to kick off the WHJESP/MLB Play Ball Weekend held at McCarthy Park on Saturday, June 15. Over 185 kids ages 5-12 participated in the 4th annual event, each child was given a MLB baseball bat and ball for attending the national event.
The Buffalo Bisons, a major sponsor of this event, were represented by Buster T. Bison, the mascot, and several players who helped coach the aspiring young athletes in pitching, hitting, and running techniques for baseball and softball.
The resident DJ’s mix of old and new school music created a lively atmosphere for all to enjoy. Grilled hot dogs, generously donated by the Buffalo Bisons, were served to the hungry players along with their families before they participated in quick rounds of a Home Run Derby, showcasing their running and hitting skills.
Special thanks go to TJ Blackmon Jr. and Yanava Hawkins for coordinating a stellar event. We would also like to acknowledge volunteer Joe Winkelsas, former Major League Baseball player, Aubrey Lloyd BPS Director of Athletics, Project Play of WNY and all the other dedicated volunteers whose contributions were invaluable in making the event a resounding success.
