WHJESP Summer Sports Clinics & Activities

The Willie Hutch Jones Educational & Sports Program (WHJESP) is proud to offer over eight individual sports clinics during the summer months of July and August. These clinics focus on developing fundamental skills in each sport, promoting physical activity, and fostering teamwork and respect among participants.

All programs are designed to be inclusive, educational, and engaging. Our goal is to offer safe and meaningful recreational experiences that encourage lifelong physical activity, confidence, and character development.

Open to: All residents of the metropolitan Buffalo and Lackawanna area
Ages: 6–16
Cost: A small registration fee per child will give you access to all summer
clinics and activities
Enrollment: Pre-registration is required. Walk-ups will be accepted, but
registration will be required. Space is limited and filled on a first-come, first-

Featured Clinics & Activities

Chess

This enriching program teaches the history, rules, and strategies of chess. Students learn piece values, tournament standards (including clocks and score sheets), and play both individual and team chess with puzzles and situational games to sharpen skills.

Tennis

This clinic covers everything from equipment care and tennis terminology to basic strokes, scoring, and drills. It also introduces youth to career paths within the tennis world.

Basketball

Players learn fundamental skills like passing, shooting, dribbling, and rebounding, as well as game rules and personal development drills that can be practiced independently.

Baseball

Join TEAMHUTCH for a summer of baseball fun! Instruction covers throwing, catching, fielding, hitting, and base running—plus friendly competitions, teamwork-building, and lots of fun. PLAY BALL!

Softball

Similar to our baseball clinic, this program includes essential skills training, scoring, equipment care, and career exposure in the sport.

Soccer

Campers are introduced to foundational skills, game rules, strategy, and safe play practices. Includes a guaranteed spot in our competitive summer league with uniforms and awards for teams.

Volleyball

Participants learn key skills such as serving, passing, setting, and spiking while understanding the rules and strategies of the game. Skills are shown in league-style matches throughout the summer.

Swimming

This clinic emphasizes water safety, swimming techniques (sidestroke, backstroke, freestyle), and emergency preparedness. Students become confident in and around the water while learning to use lifesaving equipment.

Crew / Rowing

Held at the West Side Rowing Club, these sessions are ideal for beginners. Learn-to-Row coaches guide students through the basics of rowing techniques, water safety, and teamwork, all while enjoying a unique experience on Buffalo’s beautiful waterways.
